to the rescue of Robin Hood Gardens

Building Design magazine are running a campaign to get Robin Hood Gardens, the seminal 1970's housing project by Peter and Alison Smithson in Poplar, East London, listed. The current 'preferred' route is complete demolition and building 3000 new homes. An on-line petition has 2 days left to run, and supporters include such notables as Hadid, Toyo Ito, Rogers, Venturi and the Hopkins. At a time when Brutalist housing masterpieces such as the Barbican and Trellick Tower (and its twin nearby in Poplar) become more and more desirable, and the Eastend / Docklands becomes further gentrified, demolition seems to make little sense. www.bdonline.co.uk/rescuerobinhoodgardens
